Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Reading, Pa. - The Baysox bullpen blew a lead in the eighth inning, but the team came back to win 6-4 in 10 innings to top the Reading Phillies for the second night in a row Wednesday. With the win, the Baysox improve to 65-51 on the season and into first place in the Western Division after a loss by Harrisburg.
Right-handed starting pitcher Oliver Drake pitched five innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three, but for the second start in a row, did not factor into the decision after the bullpen failed to protect the lead.
The Baysox got on the board early for the second night in a row with two runs in the first inning against Reading starter Tyler Cloyd. With one out, second baseman Greg Miclat drew a walk and with two outs, first baseman Joe Mahoney also walked. Both runners scored when right fielder Buck Britton doubled to center field to make the score 2-0. It was the second night in a row that Britton recorded a multi-RBI hit in the first inning as he hit a three-RBI triple Tuesday.
Bowie added another run in the top of the fifth inning. Shortstop Pedro Florimon hit a lead off single to left field and went to second when center fielder Xavier Avery singled to right field. The runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Miclat and Florimon scored on a sacrifice fly by Mahoney to make the score 3-0.
Reading got two runs back in the bottom half of the fifth inning against Drake. With two outs, Ozzie Chavez doubled to right field and scored when Steve Singleton doubled to left field. Singleton scored when Michael Spidale tripled to left field to make the score 3-2.
The Baysox added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning when third baseman Brandon Waring hit a one out home run to left field to make the score 4-2. It was Waring's second home run of the series and team-leading 16th of the season. Waring now has 39 career home runs with the Baysox and is three shy of tying the Baysox career home run record of 42.
The Phillies got the run right back in the bottom of the sixth inning against right-handed reliever Armando Gabino. Chris Lubanski hit a lead off single to center field and with one out, Lubanski stole second and went to third on a throwing error by catcher Steve Lerud. Lubanski then scored on a wild pitch that made the score 4-3.
Reading came back to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning against right-handed reliever Pat Egan. Brent Clevlen drew a lead off walk and with two outs, Tuffy Gosewisch doubled to center field to plate Clevlen and tie the game at four.
The Baysox retook the lead for good in the top of the 10th inning against Justin Friend. Britton hit a lead off single to center field and moved to second when Waring hit a one out single to right field. Lerud singled to right field to score Britton and Florimon hit an infield single to load the bases. Avery plated the second run of the inning when he flew into a force out to make the score 6-4.
Gabino pitched two innings in relief of Drake and allowed one unearned run on one hit. Egan pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on one hit as he was credited with his third blown save of the season. Left-handed reliever Pedro Viola pitched to two batters in the ninth inning, but walked both of them before right-handed reliever Raul Rivero finished the inning. Rivero pitched two and one-third scoreless innings to earn his third win of the season.
For the third time in seven games, the Baysox bullpen was credited with a blown save, but unlike the previous two games at home against Portland that resulted in losses, the Baysox were able to retake the lead and win Wednesday's game in extra innings. The win, the team's fourth in a row, puts the Baysox in first place for the first time since August 3.
Thursday, RHP Bobby Bundy (0-1, 13.50) takes the mound for the Baysox as they finish a series with the Reading Phillies. His opponent is RHP J.C. Ramirez (8-12, 4.63).
The Baysox return home for three games Friday, Aug. 12. The home stand includes Family Campout Friday, Aug. 12, the Football Kickoff Party Saturday, Aug. 13 and Diamond Dig Sunday, Aug. 14. All three games of the home stand also include a fireworks display.
