Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (5-6) came from behind to beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels (5-6) 4-2 Monday night in front of 3,678 fans at Waterfront Park. Trenton trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh but roared back to score three runs in the frame behind runs batted in from Melky Mesa, Corban Joseph and Addison Maruszak.
The big inning for the Thunder got started with a Bradley Suttle single and a Cody Johnson walk. One batter later, Mesa doubled deep off of the right-center field wall, scoring Suttle and cutting the Richmond lead to 2-1. That double was followed by a Joseph RBI-groundout to second base and an Addison Maruszak RBI-single to right field. Entering the inning, the Thunder had been shutout and limited to just five hits by Flying Squirrel pitching, and in five plate appearances, Trenton had scored three times to take a 3-2 lead.
The Thunder would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Johnson RBI-double, and Fernando Hernandez would pick-up his first save of the season in the ninth, giving Trenton a 4-2 win.
Game two of the three-game series between the Thunder and the Richmond Flying Squirrels (San Francisco Giants) will continue Tuesday night at 7:05 PM at Waterfront Park. Trenton will send LHP Manny Banuelos (0-0, 0.00) to the mound, and Richmond will counter with RHP Daryl Maday (0-1, 5.06). Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM on the Trenton Thunder Radio Network.
