New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - New Hampshire starter Zachary Stewart turned in an impressive start and Travis d'Arnaud homered as the Fisher Cats downed the Rock Cats, 7-3 on Monday night.
Rock Cats starter David Bromberg escaped minor jams in the first two innings - including forcing an inning-ending groundout with runners on the corners after allowing consecutive singles in the first - but couldn't end the third without allowing runs on the board. Jonathan Diaz led off the top of the third with a walk and Anthony Gose followed with an infield single. Bromberg forced the next two batters to pop out before Mike McDade lined a bases clearing double into right field.
The Fisher Cats continued to tack on runs in the inning. d'Arnaud's single to right scored McDade for the 3-0 advantage. Bromberg then plunked Ricardo Nanita with a pitch before unleashing a wild pitch that allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Moises Sierra then laced a base hit into center field that plated two more runs for the 5-0 lead. Sierra was thrown out attempting to steal second base to end the inning.
New Hampshire looked to strike again in the fourth, courtesy of a couple of miscues by the Rock Cats. An error by shortstop Chris Cates allowed leadoff batter Mark Sobolewski to reach first safely before Bromberg hit another batter. Bromberg came back to force a fly out in foul territory and an inning-ending double play started by Cates.
Meanwhile, Stewart breezed through the first four innings as he retired the first 13 batters he faced. The Rock Cats didn't reach base until the fifth inning when Joe Benson lined a base hit into left field. Evan Bigley followed with a single to right which put Benson on third, but Bigley was thrown out at second. Sobolewski's throwing error at third on a ball hit off Mark Dolenc's bat allowed Benson to cross the plate for the Rock Cats' first run of the game.
Stewart (1-1) finished with one unearned run on two hits through 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five while walking none.
Bromberg (1-1) managed to keep the Fisher Cats off the board in every other inning he worked, but the damage was already done after the five-run third. He scattered seven hits and struck out three in seven innings.
d'Arnaud slugged his first home run of the season with a solo blast in the eighth. He finsihed with two hits, two runs and two RBI. Sobolewski added an RBI single in the eighth inning.
ALL-STATE PLAYER OF THE GAME: OF Evan Bigley delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning to finish with two hits on the night for the Rock Cats.
