Eastern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of April 7th through April 17th:

Reading Phillies first baseman Cody Overbeck has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of April 7th-April 17th. The 24-year old is batting .366 (15-for-41) with two doubles, five homers, 13 RBI, 10 runs scored, two walks, one stolen base and a .780 slugging percentage over 11 games while leading the R-Phils to a league-best record of 8-3. Overbeck has at least one hit in eight of the 11 games he has played in this season and has three multiple hit games, including going 5-for-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 13-1 win at New Hampshire on April 11th. The 6'1", 200 lb. slugger currently leads the league home runs (5), RBI (13), total bases (32) and slugging percentage (.780). The Atoka, Tennessee native is also tied for first in the league in runs scored (10), ranked second in OPS (1.176), tied for third in hits (15) and ranked fourth in extra-base hits (7) and seventh in batting average (.366). Cody, who combined to hit .276 with 29 doubles, 24 home runs, 82 RBI and 79 runs scored in 136 games between Class-A Clearwater and Reading last season, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the ninth round of the 2008 draft after hitting .356 with 17 home runs during his junior season at the University of Mississippi.

Aaron Thompson, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Altoona Curve, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 7th-April 17th. The 6'2", 190 lb. southpaw has started two games for the Curve this season and has posted a record of 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA over 12 innings pitched. The 24-year old made his first start of the season for the Curve on Saturday, April 9th at Erie. He struck out two batters and walked one while allowing just one run on one hit in six innings of work to earn the victory for the Curve in a 6-2 win over the SeaWolves. The Beaumont, Texas native was equally impressive in his second start of the week against the visiting Richmond Flying Squirrels last Thursday, surrendering just two hits and one walk while striking out five batters over six shutout innings of work to pick up his second win of the season. Thompson is currently tied for the league lead in wins (2), is ranked second in WHIP (0.42) and third in batting average against (.079). He is also tied for third in ERA (0.75) and tied for fifth in innings pitched (12.0). Aaron was acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates when he was claimed off from waivers from the Washington Nationals on December 23, 2010. He was originally selected by the Florida Marlins with 22nd overall pick of the 2005 draft.
