Trenton Thunder News Release
Trenton, NJ - A late-inning home run from third baseman Brandon Laird gave the Thunder hope, but that was the last hit they could attain off Portland pitching, as Trenton dropped the first game of the home stand to the Portland Sea Dogs, 3-1 at Waterfront Park. With the loss, the Thunder are now 8-6 on the season.
After four innings of scoreless baseball, Trenton ended up being the team that struck first. In the bottom of the fifth off Portland RHP Eammon Portice, Damon Sublett lined a single into left field for Trenton's second hit of the game. After a Reid Gorecki groundout that advanced Sublett to second base, Kevin Smith knocked an RBI double into the left-center field gap to bring Sublett home and give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.
Portland would end up tying it up in the top of the seventh inning off Trenton LHP Wilkin De La Rosa. Ray Chang led off the inning with a walk and moved to second after a Jose Iglesias single. Both runners advanced a base after Chih-Hsien Chiang blooped a single into shallow center field. After Jason Place popped up to second for out number two, Ryan Kalish hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field that would score Chang from third, and tie the score at one.
The Sea Dogs would eventually take the lead for good in the eighth inning off Trenton LHP Wilkin De La Rosa. With two outs in the eighth, Portland first baseman Lars Anderson and third baseman Ray Chang hit back-to-back home runs to give the Sea Dogs a 3-1 advantage.
With two out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Brandon Laird kept hope alive, as he drilled a solo home run over the left field wall to cut Portland's lead to one. But the next batter, Damon Sublett, could not carry the momentum and grounded out to second base to end the game.
Trenton RHP Lance Pendleton made his third start of the game and allowed just two hit over four and one-third innings.
The Thunder continue their home-stand on Friday as they play the second of four with the Sea Dogs. RHP DJ Mitchell starts for Trenton. Portland counters with RHP Casey Kelly. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
