Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Southpaw Rudy Owens (1-0) tossed six innings and struck out five while third baseman Jordy Mercer ended up a single shy of the cycle as the Altoona Curve held off the Erie SeaWolves, 3-2, on Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark.
Trailing by one entering the fourth, Mercer took SeaWolves starter Thad Weber (0-2) deep for his first home run of the season and tied the game at one.
An inning later, Gorkys Hernandez singled off the glove of the pitcher Weber and was eventually moved to second on a sacrifice by Chase d'Arnaud. After Jim Negrych struck out, Miles Durham worked the count and was hit by a pitch to bring Mercer to the plate. The Oklahoma native cashed in once again as he doubled with two away to drive in Hernandez and put Altoona out in front, 2-1.
The run that proved to be the difference maker was Mercer's in the eighth as the third sacker led off the inning with a triple to right-center. Matt Hague came up two batters later and really battled with reliever Zach Simons before singling into right center to bring Mercer home and put Altoona up by two.
Erie threatened in the ninth against Daniel Moskos but the lefty would prevail and nail down his third save of the season. Josh Burrus led off the inning with a double and was brought home by Audy Ciriaco with no one out but Moskos buckled down and retired Max St. Pierre, Cale Iorg and Shawn Roof to end the game.
Mercer finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Alex Presley extended his team-best hitting streak to nine games by going 3-for-3. Hague finished the night 2-for-3 and leads the team in RBI with 11.
Winners of four straight, the Curve (11-3) will send LHP Justin Wilson (1-1, 4.66) to the mound in the second game of the series with Erie (4-10) on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. The SeaWolves will counter with lefty Andy Oliver (1-1, 5.59), who defeated the Curve last Sunday at Jerry Uht Park in the series finale.
The first 2,000 fans making their way into BCB on Friday night will receive a Blue-White Football Schedule Magnet Giveaway courtesy of Student Bookstore of State College and WTAJ. Kids can also run the bases after the game. For tickets and more information, visit www.AltoonaCurve.com or call 877.99.CURVE.
