Reading Fightin Phils News Release
Highly-touted pitching prospect Stephen Strasburg, the number one overall pick in the 2009 First-Year-Player Draft, is scheduled to take the hill for Harrisburg on Monday, April 26 at 6:35 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium, as the R-Phils entertain the Senators in game one of an exciting three-game series.
Field Level and General Admission tickets still remain for Monday night's home game against Harrisburg and can be purchased in-person at the FirstEnergy Stadium box office, by calling (610) 375-8469, or online at readingphillies.com.
Strasburg, 21, made his first official Minor League start earlier this season in Altoona against the Curve on April 11. The 6'4", 220 pound righty allowed four runs (one earned), two walks, and four hits over five innings to earn his first career Minor League victory. He fanned eight batters on the evening, and continued to make headlines over his next two outings -- the last of which was against the R-Phils in Harrisburg on April 21.
During his start against the R-Phils on Wednesday, Strasburg tossed 68 pitches over five scoreless innings en-route to the Senators 3-0 victory. The San Diego native allowed just one hit and one walk, while fanning six R-Phils batters. He enters Monday's contest in Reading with a 2-0 mark and a 0.73 ERA with 17 strikeouts over 12.1 innings pitched this season.
Before putting on a Senators uniform, Strasburg was making a name for himself on the mound at San Diego State -- compiling one of the most dominating seasons in college baseball history. In 2009, he posted a 13-1 mark with a 1.32 ERA with 195 strikeouts and 19 walks over 109 innings. He led the nation in strikeouts, and ERA, and helped lead the Aztecs to regionals for the first time since 1991.
In the summer of 2009, the Washington Nationals used the first pick in the 2009 First-Year-Player Draft to select Strasburg, despite the fact that they would have to reward him with a record contract. Just minutes before the August 17 deadline, the Nationals and Strasburg agreed to a record $15.1 million Major League deal, including an unprecedented $7.5 million bonus.
Later in 2009, Strasburg made his Arizona Fall League debut, where he posted a 4.26 ERA with 23 strikeouts over 16 innings and led the league with four wins. He was named as an Arizona Fall League Rising Star, and was also AFL Pitcher of the Week on November 9, 2009.
Monday's game will also feature another great R-Phils All-Decade Team Player Photo. Outfielder Michael Taylor, last year's Eastern League Rookie of the Year, is the third photo in the series, and the first 500 adults who enter FirstEnergy Stadium on Monday evening will receive this collectible item. Monday night is also another Academic All-Stars program, thanks to Kutztown University. The Academic All-Stars Program is an opportunity for schools to recognize and reward students for a variety of achievements made in the classroom.
