Thunder Slip Past Connecticut 2-1 On Sunday Afternoon

(Norwich, CT)- Trenton Starting Pitcher Ryan Pope hurled 6 2/3 solid innings to lead Trenton over Connecticut 2-1 on Sunday afternoon from Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. Trenton won three out of four games in the series against Connecticut.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the seventh inning, Trenton Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci led off the top of the seventh inning with an opposite-field solo home run off of Connecticut Reliever Matt Yourkin (1-1). The home run was the first for Trenton this season, and Vechionacci's first-ever home run as a member of the Thunder.

Trenton (6-3) tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Designated Hitter Chris Malec. Connecticut took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an error by Vechionacci. Pope (1-0) yielded only six hits in 6 2/3 innings (all singles). He struck out six and walked two. Pope at one point retired eight straight Connecticut hitters. Trenton turned three double plays defensively behind Pope. Trenton Reliever Jose Valdez notched his third save with two shutout innings. Connecticut (5-6) put runners at first and third base with two outs in the ninth, but Valdez retired Connecticut Second baseman Brock Bond on a ground out for the final out of the game. The victory was Pope's first Double-A win.

Connecticut Starting Pitcher Daryl Maday went 5 2/3 innings and only allowed three hits and one run. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Trenton Left fielder Colin Curtis had two singles in the win. Trenton Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to seven-games with a second inning double.

Trenton continues its road trip on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, NY. Trenton will start a three-game series against the Binghamton Mets (Double-A affilate of the New York mets). RHP Eric Hacker (1-0, 1.59) will start for Trenton against Binghamton LHP Mike Antonini (1-0, 2.79). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.
