Defenders Bats Can't Deliver In 2-1 Loss To Trenton
April 19, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Defenders spent the third day in a row trying to figure out how to capitalize on opportunities as they fell 2-1 to Trenton, dropping their home opening series 3-1.
It was a 3B-Marcos Vechionnacci solo homerun in the seventh off losing pitcher LHP-Matt Yourkin (1-1) that would be the difference maker. It would be the only run Yourkin would give up off of four hits in just two innings of work and notched a lone strikeout.
Connecticut would score first in the bottom of the first as they capitalized on a Vechionnacci error to plate 2B-Brock Bond who leadoff with a single, Defenders led 1-0.
Trenton would answer quickly in the top of the second in similar fashion. RF-Edwar Gonzalez drove a leadoff double to the wall in left-center then a SS-Brian Bocock error trying to get Gonzalez going to third on the groundball instead of firing to first allowed Trenton to get runners on the corners. DH-Chris Malec reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Gonzalez to score and tie the game at 1-1.
The Defenders would have their chances in the fifth, sixth, and seventh as they would get their leadoff guy aboard but double plays in each inning would squander any opportunities. The best chance came in the ninth after a leadoff single by CF-Mike Mooney, sac bunt by pinch hitter Brad Boyer and a ground out by Williams placed the tying run ninety feet away. Pinch hitter Andy D'Alessio drew a walk and then Bond grounded to short to end the game.
Connecticut's starter, Daryl Maday (0-0) turned in another fantastic start allowing just one earned run on three hits over 5.2 innings and striking out three in the no decision.
Trenton's starter, Ryan Pope (1-0) outlasted Maday by hurling 6.2 innings of six hit ball, allowing just one earned run, walked two and fanned six in route to his first win.
The Defenders will welcome the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto) into town Monday night for a three game series, first pitch slated for 6:35pm. This will be the second meeting for these teams in under a week. Connecticut leads the overall series 2-1.
