(Trenton, NJ)- Kurt Airoso hit a two run home run in the sixth inning and Victor Mandez followed with a solo shot in the eight inning propelling the Erie SeaWolves to a 4-3 victory over the Trenton Thunder at Waterfront Park on Tuesday afternoon.
The Thunder led 3-1 behind Jeff Karstens through five innings but in the sixth Juan Tejada singled up the middle setting the stage for Airoso's 19th home run of the season which cleared all four tiers of billboards in left field.
Two innings later Mendez hit a hooking line drive that cleared the wall near the left field foul pole off of Ben Julienel (2-1) who took the loss. Mike Bumatay (2-3) pitched an inning and a third of perfect relief for the win. Edwin Almonte worked the ninth to pick up his league leading 30th save.
The teams traded runs in the 1st Inning. Erie (54-48) got an RBI single from 1B Juan Tejeda, while the Thunder (53-49) got an RBI double from 1B Shelley Duncan. Trenton scored single runs runs in the 4th and 5th Inning for a 3-1 lead. An RBI double from J.T. Stotts and a run-scoring hit by Bronson Sardinha plated the runs.
Despite the loss the Thunder remain in first place in the EL Northern Division due to Portland's 9-4 loss at New Britain on Tuesday afternoon. The series continues on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. Charlie Issacson (6-4, 2.71) starts for Trenton against Erie's Nate Cornejo (4-12, 4.59).
