New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

(NORWICH) - Left fielder Fred Lewis and center fielder Carlos Valderrama drove in runs with hits in the third inning giving Norwich an early lead, and the Navigators held on for a 3-2 win Tuesday night over New Hampshire.

Lewis drove in designated hitter Brad Vericker with a double to right field off Fisher Cat starter Casey Janssen (1-1) to make it 1-0, Valderrama's single plated Lewis.

Norwich (49-54) added a run in the fourth, stringing together three straight hits with two outs. Vericker's single scored second baseman A-J LaBarbera (2-for-3, R) to give the Navigators a 3-0 lead.

New Hampshire (51-51), in losing its sixth straight, failed to score a run against Norwich starter Alfredo Simon, who left after four innings. They did get a unearned run off winning pitcher Chris Begg (5-5) in the sixth. After back-to-back errors allowed Miguel Negron and Brad Hassey to reach, Clint Johnston drilled an RBI single to right field to make it 3-1. But Ryan Roberts struck out on a 3-2 pitch, and Norwich caught Johnston trying to steal to end the inning, one of four double-plays turned by the Navigators.

With one out in the ninth, Johnston and Roberts walked. Billy Sadler came on in relief for the Navigators and got Chip Cannon to flight to center field. Ron Davenport (3-for-4, RBI) followed with a single, scoring Johnston to make it 3-2. Ron Acuna ended an 11-pitch at-bat with a line shot to short to end the game.

The Fisher Cats try to bounce back in Norwich tomorrow night with Ismael Ramirez (7-10, 4.13) on the mound against Navigator southpaw Brian Burres (8-4, 3.78). Game time is 7:05pm Wednesday night.

Live coverage can be heard on the Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman at 6:55pm.

New Hampshire returns home next Monday, August 1 to open a series with the Trenton Thunder. Tickets for all remaining home games are available through www.nhfishercats.com or by calling 603-641-2005.
