Two Former Eastern Leaguers Set To Be Inducted Into The Baseball Hall of Fame This Weekend

This Sunday in Cooperstown, New York, two players that made stops in the Eastern League during their minor league careers, Wade Boggs and Ryne Sandberg, will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

During his 18-year Major League career Boggs was a 12-time All-Star and a five-time batting champion. He collected 3,010 hits Sandbergand a .328 lifetime batting average while

playing 11 seasons for the Boston Red Sox, five seasons for the New York Yankees and two seasons the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Before Boggs made it to the Majors, he spent six seasons working his way through the Red Sox minor league system. Two of those seasons, 1978 and 1979, were spent playing in the Eastern League for the Bristol Red Sox. Boggs hit .311, which ranked third in the league, for the 1978 Eastern League champions and in 1979 finished second in the batting race, with a .325 average.

One of those three seasons was spent in Reading as a member of an R-Phils team that was the second half champion in the Southern Division in 1980. In 129 games with the R-Phils Sandberg hit .310, which ranked third in the league, with 11 home runs, 79 RBI and 95 runs scored.

In 16 seasons in the Majors, 15 as a Cub, Sandberg was a 10-time All-Star, won nine straight gold glove awards at second base, and was named the National League MVP in 1984.

B-Mets Left-Hander Evan MacLane Shines In His Double-A Debut

Binghamton Mets left-hander Evan MacLane made his Double-A debut against the Bowie Baysox at Prince George's Stadium on Sunday night and the 22-year old did not disappoint, tossing a complete game shutout to lead the B-Mets to a 2-0 victory. MacLane struck out seven batters and walked only two while scattering five hits to out duel Bowie starter Cory Morris, who pitched six shutout innings.

The 6'2", 185 lb. hurler, who was selected by the New York Mets in the 25th round of the June 2003 draft, received a promotion from Single-A St. Lucie to Binghamton after going 8-5 with a 3.20 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 112.1 innings of work in the Florida State League.

MacLane was given all the offense he would need in the top of the seventh inning when another recent addition from St. Lucie, Lastings Milledge, delivered a two-out, two-run single. Milledge, the 12th overall pick in the 2003 draft, is batting .386 (17-for-44) with three doubles, nine runs scored and five stolen bases in 10 games with the B-Mets.

The 6'3", 200 lb. slugger played in four games with the Baysox last week and went 6-for-15 (.400) with one double, three RBI and one run scored. Lopez started a pair of games at catcher for the Baysox and was the designated hitter in his other two appearances.

It is expected that Lopez, a native of Ponce, Puerto Rico, will be activated from the disabled list and rejoin the Orioles on July 25.

Lopez is the fourth member of the Orioles that has had had a rehab stint with Bowie this season, joining OF Luis Matos, RHP Jason Grimsley and LHP Erik Bedard.
