Connecticut Defenders News Release
(Norwich, Conn.) -- Tim Hutting made a game-saving diving catch of Ron Acuna's liner up the middle with men at 2nd and 3rd and two outs in the 9th, as the Norwich Navigators hung on to defeat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 3-2, at Dodd Stadium tonight.
The Navigators took a 3-0 lead on two-out RBI hits by Fred Lewis and Carlos Valderrama in the 3rd and Brad Vericker in the 4th. But the Fisher Cats capitalized on two Norwich errors to score an unearned run in the 6th off Chris Begg (5-5), making his first appearance (in relief of Alfredo Simon) back from a month on the disabled list. The Navs took the 3-1 lead into the 9th, but Matt Palmer walked back-to-back batters with one out and was pulled in favor of Billy Sadler. Sadler got Chip Cannon to fly out to deep center but Ron Davenport lined an RBI double into the rightfield corner, scoring one and putting the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. After a lengthy battle, Ron Acuna lined one up the middle, but shortstop Tim Hutting was shading him that way and made the diving catch to seal the win for Norwich. Begg (5-5) picked up the win and New Hampshire starter Casey Janssen (1-1) took the loss. Sadler was credited with his 5th save of the season.
The Navigators will look to make it three in a row over the Fisher Cats tomorrow night when they send lefty Brian Burres (8-4) to the mound against Fisher Cats righty Ismael Ramirez (7-10). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
