Thunder Powers Past Mavericks, 6-2

Independence, MO - Wichita recorded a season-high four power play goals en route to a 6-2 victory against Kansas City on Friday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.

Jamie Doornbosch and Lane Bauer each had three assists while Mark MacMillan had a goal and an assist. Shane Starrett was outstanding in net, stopping 41 shots and earned his sixth win of the year.

The Thunder took advantage of two early penalties by the Mavericks and led 2-0 after the first. Dyson Stevenson scored at 9:31 after Doornbosch's shot hit the end wall and came right to him near the front of the net. His goal came during a delayed penalty, which meant the Thunder stayed on the power play. MacMillan found a rebound near the left post after Doornbosch fired a one-timer on net and he recorded his sixth of the season.

Greg Chase scored early in the second off a beautiful feed from Jeremy Beaudry and increased the lead to 3-0. Kansas City cut it to one with two unanswered goals in a five-minute span. Eric Freschi put home a backhand at 2:28 to cut the lead to 3-1. Shawn Pauly found the net at 7:35 that made it 3-2 in favor of the Thunder.

Travis Brown recorded his second goal of the season at 11:59 on the man advantage with a one-timer from the top of the right circle and made it 4-2. Three minutes later, Istvan Sofron found a rebound near the net after Doornbosch fired a one-timer and he stuffed it home for his second of the year and 5-2 lead.

Wichita tacked on a late goal with eight seconds left in the third as Travis Ewanyk recorded his fourth of the year and gave the Thunder a 6-2 lead.

The Thunder improved to 9-1 overall, which is its best start in franchise history and improved to 4-0 away from home. Beaudry had a pair of assists while Chase recorded two points (1g, 1a).

Wichita went 4-for-5 on the power play. Kansas City was 0-for-2 on the man advantage.

The Thunder remains in Independence tomorrow night for another meeting against the Mavericks at 7:05 p.m.
