Rookie netminder joins team ahead of two-game set in Quad City
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks and the AHL's Rockford IceHogs announced Saturday that they have signed goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos to an ECHL contract. Sakellaropoulos will join the team ahead of Indy's two game series at TaxSlayer Center against the Quad City Mallards, which starts Saturday night.
Sakellaropoulos, 23, made his professional debut last Saturday for Quad City, stopping 14 of 16 shots in a relief appearance against the Fort Wayne Komets. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound netminder began the 2017-18 season with Fort Wayne, seeing action in a pair of preseason contests against the Fuel.
A native of Tinley Park, Ill., Sakellaropoulos is a graduate of Union College (N.Y.), where he finished with a 40-22-13 record in 82 career games for the Dutchmen. As a senior in 2016-17, Sakellaropoulos posted a 22-6-2 mark alongside a 2.60 goals against average and a .916 save percentage, making him a finalist for the ECAC's Ken Dryden Award (goaltender of the year).
