
Thunder knock off Connecticut 5-4 in ten innings

(Norwich, CT)- Trenton Shortstop Eduardo Nunez scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the 10th inning, and Trenton defeated Connecticut 5-4 in 10 innings on Friday night from Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. The win was Trenton's second in extra-innings so far this season.
With the game tied at 4-4 in the top of the 10th, Nunez walked with one out against Connecticut Reliever Jesse English (1-1). With two outs in the frame, Center fielder Colin Curtis singled to move Nunez to third base. Nunez scored from third on a wild pitch by English to put the Thunder on top 5-4. In the bottom of the 10th inning, Thunder Reliever Jose Valdez struck out Connecticut Pinch-hitter Andy D'Alessio with runners at first and second base and two outs. Valdez earned his second save of the season. Trenton Reliever Michael Dunn (1-1) tossed 2 2/3 shutout innings to pick up the win.
Trenton took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI ground out by Catcher Francisco Cervelli. Connecticut responded with two runs in the bottom half of the second inning off of Trenton Starting Pitcher Zach McAllister. The first run came home on an error by Nunez. Connecticut Catcher Jackson Williams drove home the second run on an RBI single to give the Defenders a 2-1 lead. Trenton responded with a three-run fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Trenton Third baseman Justin Snyder connected on a two-run two-out single off of Connecticut Reliever Ben Snyder to give the Thunder a 3-2 lead. The Thunder tacked on another run on an RBI single by Trenton Shortstop Eduardo Nunez. The Defenders scored a run in the fourth, and the tying run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Right fielder Tyler Graham. Connecticut First baseman Brett Pill finished the game 2 x 2, with two runs, and two walks.
McAllister received his second straight no-decision for the Thunder. He yielded four hits and three runs (two earned) in 5 1/3 innings. Connecticut Starting Pitcher Jesse Foppert went three-plus innings and also received a no-decision. He allowed three hits and three earned runs. Snyder relieved Foppert and tossed five innings. He gave up only two hits and one run. He retired the final 13 batters he faced. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Trenton and Connecticut play the third game of the four-game series on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. RHP Ivan Nova (0-0, 0.00) will make his Double-A debut for Trenton against Connecticut RHP Henry Sosa (0-0, 2.25). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.
