Sens fall to the Phils on Friday night 6-5

The Senators couldn't come up with the one big hit they needed on Friday night against Reading and fell 6-5 in front of 3,687 fans at Metro Bank Park. The Senators scored first and last in the game, but the Phils score more in the middle innings for the win.

Ross Detwiler started for the Sens and lasted just 2.1 innings in taking the loss. He was touched for four runs in the second inning, including giving up a two-run home run to Reading starting pitcher Vance Worley. Harrisburg wasn't charged with an error in the inning, but the defense was somewhat shoddy and failed to run an inning ending double play. Reading struck again in the third on a lead off home run off the bat of Brad Harman giving Reading a 5-1 lead. The home runs by Worley and Harman were the first two allowed this season by the Sens pitching staff.

The first two runs scored by Harrisburg on Friday night were on bases loaded walks, both to Ofilio Castro. The first one was in the first inning giving the Sens a short lived 1-0 lead then again in the sixth, to trim the deficit to 5-2. Later in the sixth inning, Jhonatan Solano singled with two outs scoring two runs to cut the lead to just a single run at 5-4.

Both teams failed to capitalize on one our doubles in the seventh and both had scoring opportunities in the eighth but failed to score. In the top of the ninth, Kevin Mahar doubled in Quintin Berry with a big insurance run which made the score 6-4 Reading.

In the last of the ninth, the Sens plated a run on a double by Leonard Davis, but Bill Rhinehart grounded out with two runners on base to end the ballgame.

With the loss Harrisburg drops to 2-5 while Reading improves to 4-3. The series continues on Saturday night with a 7pm start. The Sens send LH Cory VanAllen to the mound against RH Mike Stutes for the R-Phils.
