Friday, April 17 - 6:35 p.m.
Blair County Ballpark- Altoona, PA
Game #8 Home Game #2
LAST NIGHT: Last night, before 5,174 fans, the Altoona Curve were nearly no-hit by the Erie SeaWolves in a 3-0 defeat. Through 8.2 innings, Erie right-handers Alfredo Figaro, Zach Simons and Brett Jensen stymied Curve bats before Altoona's Jamie Romak broke up the no-hit bid in the ninth. The loss for Altoona is their seventh in a row.
TONIGHT'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Altoona Curve will look for their first win of the 2009 season tonight as they take on the Erie SeaWolves (AA - Detroit) in the second game of a four-game set at Blair County Ballpark...This is the first time in franchise history that Altoona has started a season 0-7...The Curve are currently the only team in all of Double-A without a victory.
TONIGHT'S STARTING PITCHERS: Altoona's Jared Hughes will make his second start of the season tonight. In his last outing (Friday), Hughes tossed 6.0 shutout innings against the SeaWolves at Jerry Uht Park. Hughes did not factor in the decision.
The 'Wolves will send right-hander Brooks Brown to the mound. The 23-year old was selected in the first round of the 2006 draft (34th overall) out of the University of Georgia by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Brown spent the last two seasons with the Double-A Mobile Baybears of the Southern League and was dealt by Arizona to the Detroit chain in order to keep their Rule V selection, James Skelton...Brown tossed 5.0 shutout innings against Altoona on Saturday afternoon
CURVE/ERIE SERIES: Tonight is the sixth of 25 meetings between Altoona and Erie. With the unbalanced schedule in the E.L., Erie will be the Curve's most common opponent in 2009. In 2008, Altoona sported an 11-7 record against the SeaWolves.
SERIESIOUSLY SPEAKING: Through five games of the season series, Erie's Scott Sizemore has done more than his share of damage against the Curve. Sizemore is batting .579 against Altoona (11x19) with 6 RBI and a pair of stolen basis...Conversely, Altoona's Brad Corley would prefer not to see 'Wolves pitching. Corley is just 1-for-14 (.071) in four games.
CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR: Though Altoona is off to an 0-7 start, the team has played close baseball. In their opening seven games, Altoona's largest margin of defeat has been by three runs, which has happened three times. Three of Altoona's losses have been by one run.
