Arts and Crafts...Baysox starter Troy Patton showed why so many left-handers are considered "Crafty" in the baseball vernacular, rarely breaking 85 miles per hour with his fastball yet keeping the Aeros offense off-balance all night in Bowie's 2-0 win over Akron on Opening Night at Prince George's Stadium last night. Patton, who made his Major League debut with Houston in late 2007 before being traded to Baltimore and missing all of last year following shoulder surgery, blanked Akron for six innings while allowing just four base runners (three hits and an error) and striking out six, allowing just one runner past first base in the process. The Aeros managed to get the leadoff man on just twice against Patton, but he held 1B Beau Mills at second following his double in the fourth and got a double play ball to erase 2B Josh Rodriguez's leadoff single in the sixth. Patton has made both of his starts this year against Akron and has not allowed a run in 11 innings, while also handing the Aeros both of their losses (shutout in both games).
Top Heavy...The Aeros had just four hits in the game yesterday, and three of those hits came from the top third of the order. Leadoff man Josh Rodriguez led the way with base hits in the third and sixth innings before walking in the ninth, and number-three hitter Beau Mills opened the fourth inning with a double. After that however, the production tailed off as the final six hitters in the lineup went a combined 1-19 with five strikeouts, with CF John Drennen's eighth-inning single the only knock. C Carlos Santana on a walk and LF Nick Weglarz on an error were the only other hitters to reach base.
A Look Above...Cleveland's new Class AAA affiliate in Columbus is off to a fine start, nipping the first-place Toledo Mud Hens 2-1 last night behind a strong performance from RHP Tomo Okha to climb back to the .500 mark at 4-4. 1B Michael Aubrey is leading the charge offensively in the early going, batting .464 (13-28) with a homer and seven RBI while playing in all eight games. Former Eastern League MVP Jordan Brown is also seeing ball well with a .320 average, two homers, and six RBI in seven games, while OF Matt LaPorta is batting .375 with two homers and four RBI. The Clippers are second in the International League with a .282 team batting average, but the one player not getting in on the act thus far is C Chris Gimenez, who is mired in an awful 0-18 slump to start the season.
A Look Below...The good news for Class A Kinston is that the K-Tribe is tied for first place in the Southern Division of the Carolina League. The bad news is that so is everyone else. Kinston currently sits in a four-way quagmire at 3-5, despite having the league leader in batting average (OF Matt Brown at .440) and the league leader in strikeouts (LHP Kelvin de la Cruz with 19 in just 12.0 innings). C Matt McBride also leads the league with six doubles.
