Trenton Thunder News Release
Trenton, NJ - Five runs in the fifth and strong pitching from the bullpen helped the Thunder win their eighth straight game at home, as they defeated the Erie Sea Wolves 6-4 on Monday night at Waterfront Park. With the win, Trenton improves to 25-18 on the season.
RHP Cory Arbiso came out of the bullpen to make his first start in 2010, and allowed just two hits in three innings of work. He was relieved by LHP Wilkins Arias (3-1) in the fourth inning and surrendered a one-out double to Cesar Nicolas, who later came around to score on an RBI single from Josh Burrus to give Erie a 1-0 lead.
After going down in order the first time up against Erie LHP Duane Below (2-4), the Thunder lineup was able to bat around in the fourth inning, where they scored five runs on four hits, highlighted by an RBI double into right field from Brandon Laird and an infield pop-up from Justin Snyder that dropped in, scoring two more. Below issued three walks in the inning, and two of them were able to come around and score.
RHP Ryan Pope entered the game for the Thunder in the sixth inning, and after striking out the first two batters in the frame, Pope gave up three runs, capped off by a Josh Burrus two-run homer to left field, and Erie cut the Thunder lead to 5-4.
Trenton picked up another run in the eighth inning off RHP Brendan Wise. After the two hitters reached base on errors by the Erie defense, Edwar Gonzalez singled in Brandon Laird from second base to push the Thunder lead to 6-4.
RHP Eric Wordekemper came in to pitch the ninth inning and retired the side in order for his sixth save of the year.
The Trenton pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts, which ties for their season high.
The Thunder and Sea Wolves continue their four game series on Tuesday morning, with a first pitch scheduled for 10:35 AM. RHP Lance Pendleton makes the start for Trenton, while Erie goes with RHP Thad Weber.
