Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Reading, PA)- Reading Phillies' starter Yohan Flande limited the Portland Sea Dogs to one run on six hits in seven innings, and the Phillies' offense certainly gave him the support he was looking for. Domonic Brown and Matthew Rizzotti each smacked two-run homers, giving Reading a 7-2 win in the series opener at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Ryne Miller and Yohan Flande got off to strong starts for their respective clubs, keeping the game scoreless through the first three innings.
The tie lasted until the bottom of the fourth, when the Phillies broke through with a pair of runs. Mike Spidale led off with a single, and ended up stealing second and third base. After Domonic Brown struck out, Tagg Bozied reached on an error, and also picked up a stolen base. With Matthew Rizzotti at the plate, Miller uncorked a wild pitch, bringing home Spidale with the first run. Rizzotti ended up striking out, but Kevin Mahar drove home Bozied with a double to right-center.
One inning later, Reading added to the lead. After a Freddy Galvis flyout, Quintin Berry walked, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Berry was able to take his time in crossing home plate, as Domonic Brown blasted a two-run homer over the right field wall.
All four of those runs (three earned) were charged to Ryne Miller (1-3), who allowed three hits and five walks, while striking out five, in four and two-thirds innings. Yohan Flande (3-3) picked up the win for the Phillies, going seven innings, allowing one run, six hits, and two walks, while striking out two.
Flande's lone blemish came in the top of the seventh, when Juan Apodaca singled, and scored on a double by Chih-Hsien Chiang.
Miller's replacement on the mound was Ryne Lawson, who allowed three runs in two and one-third innings of work. The first run came on an RBI single by Freddy Galvis in sixth, while the next two came on a Matthew Rizzotti home run in the seventh.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Sea Dogs got one run back, as Yamaico Navarro singled home Chih-Hsien Chiang. However, the damage had already been done, as Reading went on to the 7-2 victory.
The Sea Dogs and Phillies will play game two of this four-game series on Tuesday night at 6:35. Portland will turn to Kyle Weiland (0-3, 5.18), who will start against Reading's Drew Naylor (3-4, 4.28).
