(Portland, ME)- Portland collected 15 hits and scored two runs in each of the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Innings to beat the Thunder, 10-5, on Thursday afternoon. Trenton earned a split of the four-game series, despite the loss.
Portland (29-22) took a 2-0 lead against the Thunder and starter Phil Hughes in the 2nd Inning. SS David Bacani delivered a two-out, two-run double for the lead. Trenton (27-27) came back with three runs in the 3rd inning for the lead. 1B Shelley Duncan plated one run on a ground out. SS Felix Escalona then added a two-run double off Sea Dogs starter Jose Vaquedano. Portland grabbed a 4-3 lead with another two-out, two run double... this time by DH Jeremy West. That lead went to 6-3 in the 6th Inning as 2B Dustin Kelly and LF Tyler Minges had run-scoring hits off reliever Charlie Manning.
Hughes (2-2) allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings of work. He walked two and struck out six. Meanwhile, Vaquedano (4-1) got through 5 2/3 innings for the win. He gave up three runs (two earned) with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Trenton got to within 6-4 with a run in the top of the seventh (RBI single by RF Bronson Sardinha), but the Sea Dogs scored twice in the bottom half. The Thunder had three straight hits in the 8th Inning, including an RBI single from 3B Kevin Howard, but LH reliever Randy Beam got out the jame to preserve the lead. Two more runs by Portland in the bottom half made the final, 10-5.
The Thunder return home for a three-game series against Reading starting Friday at 7:05 PM. Danny Borrell (1-3, 4.44) starts for Trenton against the Phillies Gio Gonzalez (2-4, 2.56).
