Defenders swept by Cats

June 1, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

The Defenders scored first but could not hold on as they fell to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7-3 at Dodd Stadium on Thursday afternoon. The Fisher Cats swept the three game set and have won four straight at Dodd.

Things started out nicely for the Defenders who have struggled greatly to score in the past week when Tyler Von Schell hit an RBI single to score Clay Timpner in the first inning. Connecticut had a chance for more, but Aaron Sisk grounded into an inning ending double play with the bases loaded to kill any chance for the Defenders to add to their lead. On the hill Chris Begg was dynamite through four innings. He sat down the first eleven New Hampshire batters he faced, but in the fifth he uncharacteristically fell behind several Fisher Cats batters, which were detrimental to his efforts. Four singles a walk and two wild pitches led to four runs with the big blows coming on consecutive singles to Eric Arnold, Carlo Cota, and Tony Miller.

The Cats added insurance in the seventh when one of the top Blue Jays prospects, Adam Lind extended his hit streak to 12 games with an RBI double to score Tony Miller. That made the score 5-1. The Defenders would not go down without a fight, scoring on a Nate Schierholtz ground out, and a Travis Ishikawa single that knocked in Clay Timpner in the bottom of the 7th. TImpner had gotten on via his second double of the game. The Defenders wouldn't get any closer, though. In the ninth, the Fisher Cats scored two runs on Billy Sadler to put the game out of reach. New Hampshire took a 7-3 win with Michael MacDonald inproving to 5-3. Chris Begg fell to 4-5.

The Defenders are back in action at Dodd stadium on Friday when the Red Sox affilitated first place Portland Sea Dogs come to town for four games in three days. Righty Garrett Broshuis (2-2) will try to stop the bleeding in game one, and will be opposed by Portland's left-hander Kason Gabbard (5-2). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:50 PM.
