Lightning strikes on Bowie, BaySox lose in five innings, 5-1
June 1, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Tony Alvarez had just put a run on the board for the Baysox in the bottom of the 5th inning to break up an Erie shutout when the umpires called the game due to inclement weather and threatening lightning in the area.
There was a constant threat of a thunderstorm throughout the entire game, and finally the skies finally did open up in the fifth inning.
James Johnson had another satisfactory start with seven strong strikeouts but was also hit up for five runs on four hits. Erie's Nate Bumstead, on the other hand, had a complete opposite pitching performance than Johnson. Bumstead struck out just two in five frames while enducing the Baysox to hit the ball directly at his defense.
His lone mistake came in the 5th on a 2-1 pitch to Tony Alvarez, who deposited the fastball clear out of the ballpark to break up the shutout.
But by then the damage had already been done.
Erie got two in the 2nd on two hits and put up three more in the top of the 5th, including a bases loaded walk to Chris Maples. Former Baysox Kurt Airoso then singled in two runs to increase the SeaWolves lead to five.
At the end of five and with the menacing clouds and the thunder inching closer to Prince George's Stadium, the umpires convened to discuss the situation just as the rain poured down violently.
After a 35-minute delay the umpires emerged from their locker room, assessed the water situation on the field and made the announcement to the 1,479 fans in attendance that the game was final.
With the tough loss, Johnson falls to 5-3 while Bumstead picks up his first victory over Bowie. It is also the third time the Baysox have lost to Erie at home this season.
ON DECK: With Erie in the rear view, the Baysox leave Friday morning on a seven day, six game road trip that will take them to New Britain and Trenton before returning home to host the Binghamton Mets for the first time this season.
