Thunder earns first win, Sexsmith too with 23 saves

STOCKTON, Calif. - Goaltender Tyson Sexsmith made 23 saves and the Stockton Thunder (1-1-1, 3 points) capitalized on three power play goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the Ontario Reign, before a crowd of 4,577 at Stockton Arena on Friday night.

Chris Lawrence, Chris D'Alvise and Aaron Clarke all scored and the Thunder kept Ontario blanked through 40 minutes.

The Thunder owned a 9-1 advantage in shots and roared out to a 2-0 lead after one period behind two power play goals.

Lawrence finished off a three-way passing play with a one-timer at the left circle with 7:30 remaining, convert ing on Aaron Clarke's threaded pass from the right wing.

D'Alvise picked up Jason Pitton's centering pass in the slot and buried a wrist shot over Kellen Briggs' blocker with 2:46 left in the period for his first goal of the season and a two goal cushion.

Sexsmith stopped 13 shots in the initial period, including a wrist shot from the left wing by Kyle Kraemer. Sexsmith followed up with five more saves in the second period.

Clarke re-directed Lawrence's centering bid from the goal mouth, through Briggs' five hole with 5:42 gone in the third to boost the lead to 3-0.

Ontario spoiled Sexsmith's shutout bid on Jon Francisco's power-play goal with 7:58 left in regulation, cashing in on a screen and catching a part of David Walker's drive from the right circle.

Sexsmith wrapped up his victory, spoiling Walker on a bid fr om between the hash marks with less than a minute left in regulation.

Briggs took the loss with 29 saves.
