Trenton Thunder News Release
(Reading, PA)- Trenton Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez hit two home runs to lead the Thunder past Reading 8-2 on Friday night from First Energy Stadium in Reading, PA. The two-home run game was the first for a Thunder player this season. Trenton's four home runs is the most the team has had in any game this season.
Trenton (74-50) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Trenton Second baseman Kevin Russo reached on an infield single to start the inning. With two outs in the frame, Gonzalez delivered a two-run home run off of Reading Starting pitcher Adam Eaton to plate the first two runs of the night. The Thunder extended the lead in the fourth inning. Catcher P.J. Pilittere singled with one out. First baseman Cody Ehlers followed with a two-run home run, his eighth of the season and first since June 14th at Reading, to increase the lead to 4-0. Pilittere produced an RBI groundout in the fifth inning to make it 5-0.
The Thunder put the game away in the seventh inning with a three-run home run by Gonzalez, his second home run of the game, off of Reading reliever Jason Mackintosh. Gonzalez finished the game 3 x 4 with two home runs, a double, and five RBI. The home run gave Trenton a 8-0 lead. Reading's only two runs of the night came in the seventh inning on an RBI triple by Left fielder Joey Hammond, and an RBI groundout by Shortstop Brad Harman. Trenton capped off the scoring in the top of the ninth inning on a solo home run by Pilittere off of former Thunder reliever Justin Pope.
Trenton Starting pitcher Jason Jones (12-5) tossed six shutout innings and scattered four hits in the win. He struck out four and walked two. Jones is now tied for second in the Eastern League in wins. Eaton surrendered seven hits and five runs (four earned) in five innings to take the loss. Every Thunder player reached base in the win, and Pilittere had two RBI scored three runs. Trenton is now 8-2 on the season against Reading, and 5-2 at First Energy Stadium.
Trenton plays the second game of the four-game series on Saturday night from Reading. RHP Jeff Marquez (0-0, 0.00) will make his first start for the Thunder this season, and he will be opposed by Reading LHP Antonio Bastardo (2-4, 3.49). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.
