Chesapeake Baysox News Release

(Bowie, MD) - The Baysox and Mets battled through eight scoreless frames before a Mike Carp solo homerun won it for Binghamton, 1-0. Bowie starter Zach Clark continued his recent success, allowed just four hits and a walk through 7.2 shutout innings. The Baysox couldn't get to Binghamton lefty Mike Antonini, who allowed five hits through 7.0 shutout innings. Bowie did not have a player advance as far as third base in the contest. Jonathan Tucker and Mike Rodriguez combined to go 4-for-7 in a game where the Baysox totaled just six hits as a team.

Clark made it look easy up until he left the game. He came out for the eighth inning and retired the first two batters he faced with no trouble. He was a little surprised when Brad Komminsk ambled out of the dugout and made the move to the bullpen, "I wanted to get the last out in the eighth, I thought when I started the inning I'd get a shot but it worked out."

Clark mowed through the Mets lineup, retiring two-thirds of the batters he faced by way of ground outs. For a determined ground ball pitcher, even that wasn't enough, "It was pretty good. I wish I could have had less fly balls, since that means I was getting up a little bit. I had a walk, I'd rather not be giving those away, but it was a good start. It would have been better if we'd won, I think that would have been the best but it was a good one."

Rommie Lewis came on to finish off the eighth, striking out Fernando Martinez to end the inning. He came back out to work the top of the ninth and gave up a one-out bomb to Mike Carp. Carp drove the pitch hard just inside the right-field foul pole to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Gerardo Casadiego came on and closed out the ninth with no further incident.

Matt Wieters led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and Sebastien Boucher got the call to pinch-run. Binghamton closer Tim Lavigne came on and got Steve Torrealba to ground into a double play before striking out Jeff Nettles to end the game for his seventh save of the year.

With the loss, the Baysox move to 74-53, still one game ahead of Akron for first place in the Southern Division. The Baysox look to increase that margin Saturday night with RHP Jason Berken (10-3, 3.74 ERA) going up against Mets RHP Tobi Stoner (4-4, 3.78 ERA).

Saturday night is 80's prom night at Prince George's Stadium, so throw on your leg warmers and tease your hair for the Baysox game! Sunday evening is Fan Appreciation Night, with Baysox players and coaches signing autographs from 4:30 to 5:30.

The Bowie Baysox are out to Beat The Streaks in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Baysox have not reached the postseason since 1997 and have never reached the Eastern League Championship. Playoff tickets are available beginning August 12th; tickets for all remaining regular season games are available on www.baysox.com or by calling the box office at (301) 464-4865.
