Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves were in control for most of Friday night's game against the Connecticut Defenders only to watch a late two-run lead evaporate. But that did not stop the âWolves as Will Rhymes lifted the âWolves to a last at-bat victory.
The Defenders struck first in the top of the third inning against Erie starter Danny Christensen. Julio Cordido reached on a two-out error by Santo De Leon at third and that gave way for Olmo Rosario who hit his third triple of the season, scoring Cordido for a 1-0 lead.
The âWolves responded in the bottom of the third against Connecticut starter Paul Oseguera. James Skelton led off and beat out a bunt single down the third base line. Caonabo Cosme followed with a single to put two on base. With two outs, Casper Wells stood in and slammed an opposite-field home run, his 13th. The three-run blast gave the SeaWolves a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Defenders cut Erie's lead down to a run. Adam Witter led off with a single and with one out, Carlos Sosa and Mike Mooney both singled to load the bases. Dave Maroul hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Witter, making it a 3-2 game in favor of the âWolves.
Erie would go back ahead by a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, De Leon stood in an homered to center for a 4-2 âWolves lead. The home run for De Leon was his fifth.
The score would remain the same until the top of the ninth inning against reliever Rudy Darrow. Dave Maroll led off with a walk and Richardson singled to put two on base. A groundout by Cordido moved the runners into scoring position. Rosario grounded out to short, allowing Maroll to score, making it a 4-3 game with two outs and a runner on third base. Simon Klink stood in and grounded a ball deep in the hole at second, the ball was gloved by Shawn Roof but an errant throw passed the first baseman Caonabo Cosme allowed Richardson to score the tying run.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Defenders brought in Steve Palazzolo to face the bottom of the Erie lineup. Skelton drew a leadoff walk and Cosme successfully sacrificed him over to second to put the winning run in scoring position for pinch hitter Pedro Cotto. Cotto was intentionally walked to set up a potential inning-ending double play. Rhymes stood in, worked the count to 2-2, fouled off several pitches and then lined the game winning RBI single off the wall in right, scoring Skelton, giving Erie a 5-4 win.
Christensen was stellar in a no-decision for the âWolves. He went eight innings for just the third time this season, allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Christensen has allowed just two earned runs over his last 14 innings pitched.
Darrow (1-0) got the win for the âWolves.
