Thunder Acquires Another Bernier
February 8, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- With the CHL trading deadline just three days away, the Wichita Thunder acquired defenseman Jonathan Bernier from the Arizona Sundogs today in exchange for the rights to goaltender Marco Emond and defenseman Dominic D'Amour.
A second-year pro out of Beauport City, Quebec, Bernier (pronounced BURN-ee-ay) had two goals and 117 penalty minutes in 35 games with the Sundogs this season. As a rookie, he appeared in all 64 games with the Sundogs last season, notching five assists and leading Arizona with 226 penalty minutes. Jonathan, a triplet whose one brother Cedric also plays for the Thunder, will be in the lineup tomorrow when the Thunder hosts the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at 7:05 p.m.
Arizona gets the rights to goaltender Marco Emond, who was acquired from the Colorado Eagles last week, but did not report to the Thunder. The Sundogs also get the rights to defenseman Dominic D'Amour, who left the Thunder last month and is currently playing in Italy.
The Thunder will also welcome injured forwards Mike Batovanja, Travis Clayton and Jason Duda back to the lineup tonight. Batovanja, who leads the Thunder with a plus/minus rating of +8, has missed the last eight games. Clayton left Tuesday's game in the first period after blocking a shot, while Duda was a scratch. The Thunder also moved injured defenseman Tyler Hanchuck and forward Chris Greene to the 30-day injured reserve today, though both players will be eligible to return to the lineup next week.
The Thunder returns to action tonight when they host the Amarillo Gorillas at 7:05 p.m. and a large crowd is expected. Saturday is "Pink at the Rink Night" and the Thunder will be wearing special pink jerseys. Several of the Thunder players will be also playing with pink hockey sticks. Both the jerseys and sticks will be auctioned off during the game and proceeds from the auction will benefit the Mark Kay Ash Charitable Foundation (MKACF).
Fans can purchase special Pink Cadillac ($25) and Red Jacket ($20) packages for the game, which include a game ticket, a special "Pink at the Rink" hockey puck and a raffle ticket good for a chance to win a pink jersey. Additional "Pink at the Rink" hockey pucks and t-shirts will also be sold during the game, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting MKACF.
The Mark Kay Ash Charitable Foundation was established in 1996 to formalize the raising and distributing of research funds for cancers affecting women. In 2000, the MKACF also began helping spread the word and raise funds to help women affected by domestic violence.
