Laredo Bucks News Release
AUSTIN, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League fell to the Austin Ice Bats 5-2 Friday night in front of a sell-out crowd of 1,900 fans at the Chaparral Ice Arena.
Laredo entered the third period with a 2-1 lead, before Austin scored four times to snap the Bucks three-game winning streak.
With the loss the Bucks fall to 30-14-2 overall (62pts), and to 11-9-2 on the road.
With Laredo leading 2-1 Austin's streak began, as Brendan Cook tallied his second power-play goal of the night (18th overall of the season) to tie the game at 2-2 at the 3:11 mark of the third.
Austin took the lead for good at 3-2, when Mike Bartlett took the puck down the right side of the Bucks end, made a move on the Laredo defender and sent it past Bucks goaltender Dustin Traylen. Traylen made the initial save, but the puck slipped past the goal line.
The Ice Bats would tally two more times in the third, when John Ronan and Daniel Veenema scored for Austin (17-28-1, 35pts) to make it 5-2.
The Ice Bats outshot the Bucks in the game 35-33, and in the third period 17-9.
Laredo falls to 21-2-1 when leading after two periods this season.
The Bucks jumped out in front of the Ice Bats at the 8:44 mark as they scored their 13th short-handed goal of the season.
With the Ice Bats on the power-play, Chris Korchinski stole the puck at center ice, skated to the left circle and dropped a pass off to Rane Carnegie in the slot, who sent the puck past Ice Bats goaltender Miguel Beaudry. Beaudry got a piece of the puck on the shot, but it slipped past the goal line. It was Carnegie's 13th tally of the season, and Korchinski's 24th helper.
Laredo outshot Austin in the first 20 minutes 10-8, with Traylen set aside all eight Ice Bats shots, and Beaudry stopping nine of 10 Bucks attempts.
The Bucks penalty killing unit was busy in the first period, killing off all three Ice Baats power-plays.
The Ice Bats tied the game up at 1-1 on the power-play 4:56 into the second period. Cook took a loose puck off the right wing boards in the Bucks end, and sent a shot through the legs of Traylen. Cook, Austin's leading scorer, netted his team-leading 17th goal of the season.
The Bucks re-took the lead 2-1 at the 7:32 mark of the period. Matt Summers took the puck off the face off from the top of the left circle, and sent a slap shot by Beaudry. It was Summers eighth tally of the season, with Gord Burnett (8), and Jeff Bes (44) picking up assists on the goal.
Laredo outshot Austin in the period 14-10, and killed off two more Ice Bats power-plays.
Traylen took the loss in net for the Bucks as he stopped 30 of 35 Ice Bats shots, while Beaudry picked up the win, setting aside 31 of 33 Laredo attempts.
The two teams played a very physical game, as they combined for 110 penalty minutes, 65 to Laredo, 45 to Austin.
Laredo All-Star defenseman Serge Dube did not play in the game, as he was suffering from a stomach virus. Dube, who slept all day to try to get better, stayed at the team hotel during the game.
The Bucks and Ice Bats will do battle Saturday night again at the Chaparral, and Sunday at the LEC. For Sunday's game Family Four Pack tickets are available for $48 (a $79 value).
