Scorpions Net Another Home Win
February 8, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-New Mexico continued their home ice domination with a 5-3 victory over Corpus Christi Friday night. The win gave the Scorps points in their last nine games at the Santa Ana Star Center.
The home stand has seen the Scorpions get out to great first periods and they did that again Friday night. Ross McCain took a shot that was deflected by Dominic Osman. Chris Robertson remained hot as he scored his 16th goal of the season on a rebound at the 12:05 mark.
Down two goals, Corpus Christi woke up late in the opening frame. Jay Latulippe delivered a picture perfect pass to Justin Quenneville who was alone in front of the net. Quenneville got goalie Mike Minard moving and was able to lift it over the goaltender with just over a minute remaining in the period.
The Rayz came out fast in the second period and tied the game up. Brent Howarth put his own rebound into the net 2:49 into the middle frame.
The Scorpions reclaimed the lead on a power play in the middle part of the period. Vladimir Hartinger threw the puck towards the net where Craig Macdonald was waiting to tip it in. The lead went back to two when Erik Johnson shot the puck threw Tapp and into the net.
Things got tight again in the third period. Howarth picked up his second goal of the game getting Corpus Christi to within a single goal.
The Scorpions sealed the game when the Rayz pulled their goalie. Ray Ortiz worked the puck to center ice. Kevin Harvey shot the puck from just outside the blue line and into the open net to finish the night's scoring.
Saturday the Corpus Christi Rayz will be back at the Santa Ana Star Center. The first 1,500 fans inside the gate will get a Stanley bobble head, courtesy of the City of Rio Rancho. Both games this weekend start at 7:15 p.m.
