Three Lexington Legends players and the team's hitting coach were chosen for the post-season South Atlantic League All-Star team announced by the league today (Thursday). Voting was done by team managers, general managers, sports writers and broadcasters. The Legends and the Asheville Tourists were the only teams to have as many as three players named to the All-Star team.

Legends' pitcher Mike Foltynewicz, second baseman Delino DeShields Jr. and first baseman Zach Johnson were selected for the team, as was hitting coach Josh Bonifay.

In addition, Foltynewicz was named the league's outstanding pitcher.

"This is a well-deserved honor for these three players and coach Josh Bonifay," said Legends General Manager Seth Poteat. "The Legends are very well-represented on the All-Star team. This group has provided a lot of great baseball highlights and memories for our fans this year, and they have been great to work with as well. We really appreciate their contributions to Legends baseball."

Foltynewicz, a right-hander, has a record of 14-3 and is scheduled to make his final start of the season in Sunday's game against Rome at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Through games of August 29, he is tied for the league lead in victories, fifth in earned run average at 2.91, tied for most starts with 26 and second in innings pitched with 148 and two-thirds.

DeShields, who was promoted to advanced-A Lancaster August 9, stole 83 bases in 111 games with Lexington, and will lead the South Atlantic League in stolen bases by a wide margin. DeShields batted .298 with 10 homers and 52 runs batted in. Through games of August 29, he was still tied for the league lead with 96 runs scored. DeShields, who was also with the Legends in 2011, now holds the team's single-season (83) and career records (113) for stolen bases, the career record for hits with 234, and the career record for runs scored with 169.

Johnson was chosen as the All Stars' designated hitter. Johnson leads the SAL in runs batted in with 107. He broke the previous Legends' single-season record of 98 RBI on August 5, when there were still 36 games left in the season. Through games of August 29, Johnson was tied for second in the league in doubles with 37. He also is tied with teammate Matt Duffy for the league lead in games played with 129.

Bonifay is in his first season as Legends' hitting coach and his second as a coach in the Houston Astros' organization. He previously served as a player-coach in the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization, and played in the minor league systems of both Pittsburgh and Houston.

The Legends will be at home this weekend for five games against Rome to complete the 2012 regular season. A doubleheader is scheduled for Friday, with the first of two seven-inning games scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Saturday's game will begin at 7:05 p.m., Sunday's at 1:35 p.m. and Monday's at 12:05 p.m. For ticket information, call (859) 422-7867 or visit lexingtonlegends.com.
