South Atlantic League Announces 2012 Annual All-Star Team

CHARLESTON, SC - Eric Krupa, President of the South Atlantic League, has announced the selection of the 2012 Annual All-Star Team. The All-Star Team was voted on by the 14 South Atlantic League Team's Field Managers, General Managers, Sports Writers and Broadcasters for a total of 56 votes.

The Annual All-Star Team was highlighted by the selections for Most Outstanding Pitcher, Most Outstanding Major League Prospect and Most Valuable Player. Michael Foltynewicz of the Lexington Legends was selected as the Most Outstanding Pitcher. Foltynewicz has a 14-3 record and an ERA of 2.91 in 26 games. Gregory Polanco, outfielder for the West Virginia Power, was chosen as the Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. Polanco is batting .325 with 137 hits and 15 home runs in 111 games. Hagerstown Suns third baseman Matthew Skole was selected as the Most Valuable Player. Skole batted .286 with a league-leading 27 home runs and 92 RBIs in 101 games before being promoted to Potomac in the Carolina League.

Joe Mikulik of the Asheville Tourists has been selected as Manager of the 2012 Annual All-Star Team. This is the fourth time Mikulik has been selected for this honor, having previously won in 2001, 2007 and 2008. Josh Bonifay of the Lexington Legends was chosen to be the Coach of the 2012 Annual All-Star team. The Asheville Tourists and Lexington Legends each had three players named to the Annual All-Star Team. The Tourists representatives include Tyler Anderson (left-handed pitcher), Harold Riggins (first base) and Trevor Story (utility infielder). The Legends contributed Michael Foltynewicz (right-handed pitcher and Most Outstanding Pitcher), Delino DeShields, Jr. (second base) and Zachary Johnson (designated hitter). The Greensboro Grasshoppers and West Virginia Power each placed two players on the team. Greensboro's Austin Barnes (catcher) and Brent Keys (outfielder) are joined by West Virginia's Alen Hanson (shortstop) and Gregory Polanco (outfielder and Most Outstanding Major League Prospect). Augusta, Greenville and Hagerstown each had one representative on the All-Star Team. Augusta's Shawn Payne (utility outfielder), Greenville's Keury De La Cruz (outfielder) and Hagerstown's Matthew Skole (third base and Most Valuable Player) complete the 2012 All-Star lineup.
