August 30, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release
Joe Mikulik has been named the South Atlantic League Manager of the Year while fellow Asheville Tourists Tyler Anderson, Harold Riggins and Trevor Story have been selected to the Class A circuit's Year-End All-Star Team for the 2012 campaign.
Mikulik, who is currently in his 13th season at the Tourists' skipper, has been named SAL Manager of the Year for the second time after receiving the honor in 2007. This year he guided Asheville to a first-place finish in the Southern Division's first half. Overall, the Tourists own the best record in the SAL at 85-50 upon entering Thursday night's game against Savannah.
Anderson was named as the top left-handed pitcher in the SAL. The Colorado Rockies' first-round draft pick in 2011 out of the University of Oregon ranks second in the league with a 2.45 ERA and is tied for fifth with 11 wins. He also has allowed only 97 hits and 28 walks in 114 innings while striking out 76 batters.
Riggins, Colorado's seventh-round draft pick in 2011 out of North Carolina State University, was named the top first baseman in the SAL. Riggins ranks second in the league with a .546 slugging percentage and is tied for second with 19 home runs. He also has a .302 batting average with 76 RBIs.
Story, who was drafted by the Rockies in the supplemental first round in 2011 out of high school in Irving, Texas, was named to the SAL Year-End All-Star Team as a utility infielder. The Tourists' starting shortstop leads the league with 41 doubles, 64 extra-base hits and 96 runs while ranking third with 231 total bases. He also owns a .273 batting average with 18 home runs and 60 RBIs.
The Tourists play their final regular-season home game on Thursday night against the Savannah Sand Gnats before traveling to Hagerstown for the slate's last four contests. The Tourists open the SAL Playoffs at the second-half Southern Division winner on Wednesday, September 5, before hosting Game 2 at McCormick Field on Friday, September 7, as well as the if-necessary Game 3 on September 8. Tickets for the playoff games are still available. For more information, contact the Tourists' front office at (828) 258-0428.
