Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads wrapped up the series win against the Lexington Legends with a 3-1 victory, before 2,868 fans at the 'Dads final home game of the 2012 regular season at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday night. With the win, coupled with a Hagerstown Suns loss, Hickory only trails the Suns by 2.0 games with four contests left for the final playoff spot.

The Crawdads (73-62, 37-29) swung in front early in the bottom of the second against RHP Jonas Dufek (L, 6-5). CF Zach Cone powered the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for a solo home run and the 1-0 lead.

Hickory added to its advantage with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. LF Hirotoshi Onaka drew a walk as the first batter of the frame. One out later, 2B Drew Robinson belted a two-run homer over the center field wall, boosting the 'Dads ahead, 3-0.

Crawdads LHP Will Lamb (W, 6-8) subdued the Legends (29-36, 68-67) bats with five scoreless innings in the start. He scattered just two hits while striking out a pair in the winning effort. RHP Paul Schwendel picked up right where Lamb left off in the top of the sixth and threw three no-hit innings, keeping the 'Dads lead at 3-0.

Lexington refused to go down quietly in the top of the ninth inning against RHP Taylor Dennis (S, 4). With the bases loaded and one away, 1B Zach Johnson skied an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, plating LF Ruben Sosa from third to bring the Legends within two runs. With runners at the corners and two down, 3B Matt Duffy bounced a grounder up the middle that SS Nick Urbanus cut off with a sliding stop behind second base. From the ground, Urbanus flipped the ball to 2B Drew Robinson for the game-ending force out, closing the 3-1 win for Hickory.
