Trenton Thunder News Release

HARRISBURG, PA - Despite matching a season-high with three home runs, the Thunder dropped the opener of their four-game series with Harrisburg on Thursday night, 7-4. at FNB Field. The Thunder managed just three hits total in the game.

With warm temperatures on City Island, both teams jumped on the board with long home runs in the second inning. It started with Chris Gittens knocking his fifth homer in his last five games with an opposite field shot to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead and continued with a solo blast from Drew Ward in the bottom of the first. The Senators jumped in front later in the frame when Tyler Goeddel lined a base hit to right field that Omar Carrizales could not bring in with a diving attempt. Goeddel scampered around the bases for an RBI triple to take a 2-1 lead.

The Senators extended their lead with an RBI double from Ian Sagdal in the third and three runs off Adonis Rosa in the fourth inning. Rhett Wiseman began the fourth with a solo homer, his league-leading 10th blast of the season, and Chuck Taylor plated two runs with two outs when he tripled to right-center to extend the lead to 6-2.

Rosa was tagged with the loss, allowing Thunder-highs in hits (7), runs (6), walks (3) and home runs (2).

Right-hander Greg Weissert made his Double-A debut in relief of Rosa and went 3.2 innings. Weissert used a pair of strike out/caught stealing double plays in his first two innings and surrendered a run in the eighth inning despite terrific defense from outfielders Omar Carrizales and Jeff Hendrix. Carrizales robbed Austin Davidson of a homer for the first out in the eighth and Hendrix took away certain extra bases from Tyler Goeddel with a tremendous diving catch in left-center.

Ben Braymer delivered his longest start of the season with seven innings to earn the win. The only two hits he allowed were solo home runs and he issued two walks to Wendell Rijo.

Ben Ruta stepped up in the fourth inning and hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot in the fourth inning. It extended his on-base streak to a season-best 11 games and helped keep him atop the Eastern League leader boards in batting average and on-base percentage.

Kyle Holder chipped in with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth inning off lefty Taylor Guilbeau, which brought the Thunder within 6-4. The Thunder offense wasn't able to put together any additional offense as Aaron Barrett finished his sixth save of the season working around only a two-out walk.

Your Thunder continue their road trip on Friday night at 7:00pm against the Senators. RHP Jose Mesa Jr. (0-0, 13.50) will start for the Thunder, RHP Wil Crowe (3-0, 0.960) will go for Harrisburg. Pre-game coverage begins at 5:45pm on 920 AM The Jersey and online www.TrentonThunder.com/Broadcast.
