Three Former Legends Named to 2018 MLB All-Star Game

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) - Three former Lexington Legends have been chosen as MLB All-Stars to be showcased during the All-Star Game at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. Jose Altuve (2010), J.D. Martinez (2010) and Mark Foltynewicz (2011 and 2012) have been named to the prestigious game.

"We are proud to have three former Legends recognized in this season's MLB All-Star Game. We truly do have the stars of tomorrow at Whitaker Bank Ballpark and it is encouraging to see the success of so many Legends now in the big leagues," said Legends President/CEO, Andy Shea.

Reigning American League Most Valuable Player Jose Altuve, who received more fan votes than any other player on the ballot, will be in the starting nine during the All-Star Game. With Lexington in 2010, Jose Altuve batted .308 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs in 94 games before being promoted. The second baseman also stole 39 bases for Lexington and was a South Atlantic League mid-season and postseason All-Star. He was named to the Legends Hall of Fame in 2014. Altuve will be just the second Astros player to start four All-Star Games, joining Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, who started four in a row for the NL squad from 1995-98 (all at second base).

J.D. Martinez will also be a starter in the All-Star Game as Designated Hitter. Martinez has crushed 27 homers, 21 doubles and one triple while driving in 74 runs and posting a .329/.392/.646/1.039 line in 85 games this season for the Boston Red Sox. During his time with the Legends in 2010, he recorded 31 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs and 64 RBI in 88 games.

Mark Foltynewicz was named as a reserve for the National League after posting a 2.37 ERA in 17 starts averaging 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings for the Atlanta Braves this season. He has allowed three runs or less in 15 of his 17 starts while opponents are hitting just .188 against him. With the Legends in 2011, he finished the season 5-11 with a 4.97 ERA in 26 games allowing 74 earned runs on 149 hits with 88 strikeouts. He improved his numbers during 2012, recording a 14-4 record in 26 games pitching 134 innings. He struck out 125 during that time, allowing 53 earned runs on 145 hits.

The Legends will also have Seuly Matias participating in the highly regarded Futures Game during the All-Star festivities. The 19-year-old has had an impressive start this season with the Legends, Single-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, and currently leads all levels of Minor League Baseball with 26 home runs and is the Royal's 3rd-best prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. This will be Matias' first Futures Game and is the lone representative of the Kansas City Royals. The 2018 Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game takes place Sunday, July 15 at 3 p.m. CT. The game will air live on MLB Network.

The 89th Midsummer Classic, at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., will be televised nationally by FOX Sports; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 180 countries. FOX Deportes will provide Spanish-language coverage in the United States, while ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network, MLB.com and SiriusXM also will provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage.
