ABOUT LAST GAME: Luc Rennie signed with the Mets on July 5, 2018 and made his first professional start in more than two years on Sunday afternoon. The righty tossed seven innings and fanned seven batters. However, the strong effort wasn't enough as Columbia fell 9-6 to Charleston. The Fireflies watched a 5-4 lead evaporate in the top of the ninth. After Matt McPhearson's RBI single - game tied at five and bases loaded - Oswaldo Cabrera launched a grand slam down the right-field line.
PROMOTED: Jeremy Vasquez is the most-recent Firefly to receive a promotion to Advanced-A St. Lucie. The 21-year-old had several bright spots with Columbia.
- Went on 29-game on-base streak to begin the season (April 5-May 6)
- One of six Fireflies named a SAL All-Star
- Became second Firefly to smash two home runs in one game this season (July 7). Quinn Brodey (April 18 @ Greenville) is the only other Firefly in 2018 to homer twice in one game.
ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER: Ten of the 16 games this season between Columbia and Charleston have been decided by a single run. In fact, the 16 games have been decided by 27 total runs.
SCOOTER: Scott Manea has reached base safely 11 times over his last six games. The 22-year-old has four doubles, a home run, eight RBIs, and three walks during this span.
TOP OF THE CHAIN: The Fireflies lead the league in walks (286) and have struck out (615) the fewest times.
THE FUTURE: Andres Gimenez was select to participate in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Nationals Park on July 15. The former Firefly will play for the World Team in a game that features the top Minor League prospects. Gimenez is currently listed as the Mets no. 1-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com. Here's what the 19-year-old did with Columbia in 2017:
- .265 average, 9 doubles, 4 home runs, 14 stolen bases (92 games)
UP THE FARM: Noah Syndergaard made a rehab start with the Brooklyn Cyclones on Sunday. The flamethrower tossed five innings and struck out seven batters. Syndergaard has been dealing with an injury to his index finger. He last appeared in an MLB game on May 25.
