RiverDogs Four-Game Winning Streak Ends in Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Charleston RiverDogs got a robust performance from its pitching staff, with Reiver SanmartÃn leading the way, but suffered a 2-1 defeat in their Monday series finale against the Columbia Fireflies at Spirit Communications Park.
The Colombian southpaw threw five innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on a pair of Fireflies (42-43, 8-10) hits. A two-out RiverDogs (45-40, 12-5) error gave Columbia its second run off SanmartÃn (0-2) which proved to be the difference-maker.
Left-hander Anderson Severino threw a pair of scoreless innings in relief before Braden Bristo dealt the bottom of the eighth, leaving a pair of runners in scoring position.
Columbia got an impressive pitching performance of its own, with Chris Viall (3-5) striking out seven in six innings of one-run baseball. Darwin Ramos followed up Viall's start with three shutout innings, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on the bases to end the game.
The Dogs got their lone run in the sixth inning when third baseman Chris Hess ripped a two-out RBI single to right field, plating catcher Jason Lopez who doubled. Hess finished the series 5-for-13 with a pair of doubles and four RBI.
Five of Charleston's eight hits went for extra bases, including a leadoff double from outfielder Frederick Cuevas, who rejoined the club on Monday for the first time since early April with Pablo Olivares hitting the seven-day disabled list.
With Monday's result, Charleston had a season-best four-game winning streak snapped as well as a six-game streak against Columbia going back to May 31st. Columbia salvaged a victory in their six-game homestand after getting swept by Greenville.
Monday's loss marked the 39th one-run game of the Holy City's season, contests which the RiverDogs have gone 18-21. Charleston falls to 8-11 on the road in single-tally differentials.

The RiverDogs have Tuesday off before starting a seven-game homestand which will first lure the Delmarva Shorebirds to Riley Park. 19-year-old right-hander Deivi Garcia (1-2, 3.60) will get the start on a Way Back Wednesday that will welcome former Charleston RiverDog and Major League reliever Dan Wheeler in conjunction with "Bullpenning Night." The RiverDogs will honor Wheeler and all innings-eaters who have taken on an extended role in the modern game.
