Olivares Hits Disabled List as Cuevas Is Called up to Fill Void
July 9, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Off to a red-hot start to the second-half, the RiverDogs will be without their best hitter in the lineup for the time being. The New York Yankees announced that outfielder Pablo Olivares has been placed on the 7-day disabled list on Monday after exiting Sunday's contest at Spirit Communications Park.
The 20-year-old Venezuelan had been the hottest hitter in the lineup, batting .338 on the season with a .404 on-base percentage, both of which would rank top-2 in the league had he finished his final plate appearance of the game to qualify on Sunday. His afternoon was cut short after squaring around to bunt and taking a pitch off his fingers.
Olivares recently went on an 11-game hitting streak that ended last Tuesday and was off to a 23-for-68 (.338) start with three home runs since the All-Star break, starting the first 16 games straight out of the gates in the leadoff spot. He was the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for June 18-24 after driving in 11 runs in a three-game series in Lexington to start the second-half.
Replacing Olivares' spot on the roster, outfielder Frederick Cuevas gets the call up from Staten Island. The 20-year-old Dominican opened this season with the RiverDogs, swinging the bat to a .271/.302/.339 clip with four doubles and three stolen bases in 17 games before being reassigned to extended spring training on April 23. He produced a .286 batting average and an .870 OPS, including two home runs, in 18 games with Staten Island before the promotion.
Without their regular leadoff man, the first-place RiverDogs (45-39, 12-4) look to continue their league best start to the second-half on Monday night in Columbia. The RiverDogs are seeking their fifth straight win overall and their second three-game sweep at Spirit Communications Park this year. Lefty Reiver SanmartÃn (0-1, 5.40) will make his second start with Charleston, facing Mets prospect and right-hander Chris Viall (2-4, 4.43). The game will be broadcast on "The Big Talker" 1250 AM in the tri-county area and online streaming at riverdogs.com and the RiverDogs' TuneIn Radio app.
RiverDogs single-game tickets, including options to the Riley Park Club, are now available for the 2018 campaign, the club's 25th season as the RiverDogs and their "175th season in dog years." Ticket information can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com/tickets.
