Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds couldn't pull off a sweep of the Hickory Crawdads, falling 5-1 on Monday night at Perdue Stadium.
Tyler Phillips (6-5) cruised to victory for the Crawdads (9-9, 39-47), allowing one run on three hits over seven innings while walking one and striking out 11. Luis Perez (1-1) took the loss for the Shorebirds (11-8, 46-40), surrendering three runs on eight hits over five innings, striking out five against one walk.
Hickory broke up the scoreless deadlock in the fourth as Ryan Dorow clocked a solo home run. In the fifth, Bubba Thompson singled with one out and stole second base, coming home two batters later on a Miguel Aparicio base-knock. Dorow then ripped an RBI triple to the left center gap to put the Crawdads up 3-0.
The Shorebirds got one back in their half of the fifth. Ryan Ripken pulled a leadoff single into right for the team's first hit, then Branden Becker poked his own single through the right side. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, then Will Robertson slapped a hopping groundball up the first base line. Phillips came off the mound to field but instead let it roll to first base, but not in time to beat Robertson to the bag. Ripken scored on Robertson's infield single, and Delmarva cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Crawdads reinforced their advantage in the sixth. Tyreque Reed singled with one out, then a walk to Clay Middleton and a Yonny Hernandez bloop single loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Pedro Gonzalez pounded a double to the left field wall, scoring Reed and Middleton. Hernandez tried to score as well and was thrown out at the plate, but the damage was done and Hickory had boosted its lead to 5-1.
Delmarva couldn't piece together enough offense to rally, putting two on in the ninth but failing to push anyone across.
Robertson finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Ripken went 1-for-3 with a walk and the Shorebirds' only run.
Dorow finished a double shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a triple, homer, and two RBIs. Gonzalez finished 2-for-5 with a double, triple, and two driven in.
After playing for a season-long 19 consecutive days, the Shorebirds will have Tuesday off before opening a seven-game road trip in Charleston on Wednesday night. DL Hall (0-5, 2.82) opens the series for Delmarva against the RiverDogs' Deivi Garcia (1-2, 3.60). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
