
Suns Win Second Straight on Sunday

Charleston, WV - Branden Boggetto had three hits for the Hagerstown Suns in a 7-2 victory over the West Virginia Power on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. The Suns improve to 6-11 in the second half and are 33-52 overall. The Suns and Power will play the series finale on Monday with a 7:05 PM first pitch.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Hagerstown scored a pair of runs against Power starter Travis MacGregor. Cole Freeman was hit by a pitch and went to second when Boggetto singled to left. Jake Scudder reached on a force attempt, but MacGregor made an errant throw that allowed Freeman to score and Boggetto to move to second. With one out, a wild pitch moved Boggetto to third and Scudder to second, and Paul Panaccione lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Suns a two-run lead.
Hagerstown added to their lead in the eighth with three more runs against Power reliever Ike Schlabach. Scudder singled to right and Nick Choruby singled to move Scudder to second. Panaccione walked to load the bases and Omar Meregildo walked to score Scudder and make it a 3-0 Suns lead. Alex Flores sent a ground ball into center field, driving in Choruby and Panaccione to give Hagerstown a 5-0 advantage.
West Virginia pulled within three in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two runs against Suns reliever Carlos Pena but Hagerstown added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth on Schlabach. Freeman smacked a one-out double to left and went to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Boggetto singled to left, plating Freeman and extending the Suns lead to 6-2. Scudder grounded into a force out that retired Boggetto at second and Choruby singled to move Scudder to second base. Panaccione lined a single to left field to drive in Scudder and give the Suns a 7-2 advantage. Phil Morse got the final three outs of the ballgame in the bottom of the ninth to give Hagerstown their second-straight victory.
Malvin Pena (1-0) threw five shutout innings in a win, allowing four hits with five strikeouts. Andrew Lee earned a hold, throwing one inning with two walks and two strikeouts. Carlos Pena also earned a hold, allowing two runs on one hit over two innings while issuing three walks and striking out five. Morse threw the ninth inning with one walk.
Notes: M. Pena has won each of his last three starts (including time with Auburn) and has a four-game personal win streak... Boggetto has a two-game hit streak... He also had his sixth multi-hit game of the season with the Suns... Choruby has three multi-hit games and a three-game hitting streak... Freeman has a three-game hit streak... Flores snapped a three-game hitless streak with his seventh multi-hit effort of the year... He also had his sixth multi-RBI game of the year... Upshaw snapped a five-game hitless stretch with his seventh multi-hit game of the year... Panaccione had his second multi-RBI game of the season... Hagerstown concludes the three-game series against the West Virginia Power on Monday evening with a 7:05 PM first pitch... The Suns will send RHP Brigham Hill (0-2, 3.18 ERA) to the mound against Power LHP Domingo Robles (6-5, 3.19 ERA).
