July 28, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

RubberDucks right fielder Will Benson, center fielder Steven Kwan, and second baseman Richie Palacios each homered to build a 4-0 lead by the third inning, and first-place Akron held on for a 5-3 road win over the Erie SeaWolves, earning a sixth straight victory overall in the opener of a six-game series at UPMC Park Tuesday night.

Turning Point

Benson homered to right field leading off the game against Erie right-hander Jesus Rodriguez, and Akron had the lead the rest of the way. In the third inning, Kwan hit a two-out solo home run to right field, third baseman Andruw Monasterio singled to right field, and Palacios hit a two-run homer to right field for a 4-0 lead.

Mound Presence

Right-hander Cody Morris began with a first-inning lead for his third straight road start, and he held Erie scoreless through three innings, extending his streak of 16 shutout innings to begin his Double-A career. That ended in the fourth, when he yielded a walk and RBI double by left fielder Kerry Carpenter. Right-hander Dakody Clemmer got the final out of the inning and worked 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two batters to hold the 4-1 lead. Left-hander Jake Miednik got one out and allowed two hits in the seventh inning. Right-hander Juan Móta got the last two outs of the inning but allowed a walk and hit in the eighth. Left-hander Ben Krauth entered and allowed a two-run double to right fielder Josh Lester, but he stranded the tying run on base in the eighth and ninth to save a second straight game.

Duck Tales

Holding a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning, Akron added an insurance run when Benson walked against right-hander Cale Coshow, stole second base and scored when Kwan hit an RBI ground-rule double to left field for a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Krauth walked center fielder Riley Greene and third baseman Spencer Torkelson before striking out catcher Dillon Dingler and second baseman Andre Lipcius, and getting Carpenter to fly out to right field.
