Thorpe Dominant in Wings Win

The Rochester Red Wings topped the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 8-1 Tuesday night at Frontier Field. The series continues Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m., with all tickets just $5 and another $1 Wednesday, with $1 Zweigle's hot dogs, peanuts, chips, and Cracker Jack.

Gosuke Katoh got the RailRiders on the board early after an hour long rain delay. His first inning solo home run off Red Wings' starter Lewis Thorpe gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 1-0 lead.

The Wings responded against RailRiders starter Nestor Cortes in the bottom of the third when Ronald Torreyes hit a double off the wall in left, moved to third on a groundout by John Andreoli, and scored on an infield single hit by LaMonte Wade Jr to tie the game 1-1.

Rochester took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth after Brent Rooker crushed his fourth home run of the season. Later that inning, Tomas Telis legged out a two out double, followed by a walk to Adam Rosales. In the next at bat, Torreyes hit his second double of the night scoring both Telis and Rosales to make the score 4-1.

Cortes lasted 4.0 innings allowing five hits, four earned runs, three walks while striking out two. He threw 91 pitches, 58 for strikes.

The Red Wings were able to extend their lead again in the bottom of the sixth against RailRiders reliever David Sosebee. Telis led off the inning with his second double of the night, followed by a walk to Torreyes two batters later. After Andreoli struck out, Wade Jr. hit his second RBI single of the game scoring Telis to give Rochester a 5-1 lead.

Wade added an RBI double in the eighth inning, his third hit of the game, to push the Wings' lead to 6-1, followed by a two-RBI single by Randy Cesar to make it 8-1.

Thorpe recorded his second straight start with double digit strikeouts, after never having more than one start with double digit strikeouts during a season in his career. He also set a career high in innings pitched with 8.0 on the night, while tying his career high in strikeouts with 12. From the first inning into the seventh Thorpe retired 18 RailRiders in a row, and finished with a final line of 8.0 innings, three hits, one earned run, no walks, 12 strikeouts, and 71 of his 95 pitches were thrown for strikes.

Preston Guilmet pitched the ninth inning, setting down the side in order.

NOTES: LHP Lewis Thorpe struck out 12 Tuesday, after tying his career high with 12 strikeouts over 5.2 innings in his last start on April 17...Thorpe is the first Red Wings starter to register double digit strikeouts in back-to-back starts since Jose Berrios in 2015.
