Thomas named AHL Player of the Week
March 22, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins begin the week in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with their 32-24-10-3 record (77 points). The Black and Gold is just one point behind the third place Worcester IceCats. Head Coach Scott Gordon's team is coming off a weekend of three straight wins over Atlantic Division rivals, and is preparing for three road games coming up this weekend. The Black and Gold defeated the Springfield Falcons, 3-2 on Friday, the Manchester Monarchs, 1-0 on Saturday and the Portland Pirates, 4-0 on Sunday.
Bruin goaltender Tim Thomas has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending March 21. The 29-year-old native of Davison, Michigan posted back-to-back shutouts on Saturday night in Manchester and Sunday afternoon against Portland on home ice, helping the Bruins continue to keep pace in the division playoff race. It was the second time in franchise history that a goaltender had consecutive shutouts. Derek Herlofsky recorded shutouts on April 5 and 6, 1997, against Worcester and Fredericton, respectively. Thomas set a new franchise single-season record on Sunday, by recording his fifth shutout of the year, surpassing Boston Bruins goaltender Andrew Raycroft's record set in the 2001-02 season. Thomas is now tied with Raycroft for second in franchise history with six shutouts, one behind Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender John Grahame. Thomas stopped 23 shots in Saturday's 1-0 win at Manchester, and 19 in Sunday's 4-0 win over Portland. He is 16-12-5 on the season, while being tied for ninth in the AHL with a 2.01 GAA, and ranking fourth with a .938 save percentage. His shutout total ties him for sixth in the league. Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to Providence Bruins Charities, to be given to local youth hockey associations.
Thomas will be on this week's edition of "Providence Bruins Weekly Presented by National City Mortgage", on Tuesday, March 23 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on WSKO AM-790, The Score. The show will also feature Providence Bruins Head Coach Scott Gordon and Joe McDonald of the Providence Journal. This week's featured guest in the "Providence Bruins Alumni" segment will be defenseman Jonathan Girard. Girard, the 2000-01 Providence Bruins Rookie of the Year and 2001-02 Best Defenseman, played all of last year with the Boston Bruins. He was seriously injured in a car accident in Rawdon, Quebec on July 24, 2003, and is working to return to action next season.
The Bruins will play three road games against Atlantic Division rivals this week, beginning on Friday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m., when they face off with the Lowell Lock Monsters. They take on the Springfield Falcons on Saturday night at 7:35 p.m. and the Worcester IceCats on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. All the game action will be broadcast live on WDDZ AM-550.
The Bruins return home to host Lowell on Wednesday, March 31 at 7:05 p.m.
