Bruins' Thomas named Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week

March 22, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today that Providence Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending March 21, 2004. Thomas was perfect in two games last week, recording back-to-back shutouts and keeping the Bruins in the thick of the Atlantic Division playoff race.

Providence went into the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester on Saturday night, and before a sellout crowd of 9,916 fans, put an end to the Monarchs' 14-game points streak with a 1-0 victory. Thomas made 23 saves on the night for his fourth shutout of the season – all on the road, and all by a 1-0 score. On Sunday, Thomas posted a goose egg on the Dunkin' Donuts Center scoreboard for the first time in 2003-04, stopping all 19 Portland shots in the Bruins' 4-0 victory over the Pirates.

In recognition of his achievement, Thomas will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to Providence Bruins Charities for distribution to local youth hockey organizations in Thomas's name.

Originally drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in 1994, Thomas has a record of 16-12-5 in 34 appearances with Providence this season, recording a 2.01 goals against average, .938 save percentage and five shutouts. The native of Flint, Mich., and former All-American at the University of Vermont made his NHL debut with Boston last season, appearing in four games with the parent Bruins and going 3-1-0. He is 40-30-10 in 84 career AHL matches with Providence and Hamilton.

Other nominees for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Albany center Steve Kariya, Bridgeport goaltender Wade Dubielewicz, Cincinnati goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, Cleveland center Grant Stevenson, Hamilton center Chris Higgins, Hartford goaltender Jason LaBarbera, Hershey right wing Dennis Bonvie, Houston right wing Jeff Hoggan, Lowell center Jim Henkel, Manchester center Steve Kelly, Manitoba center Sean Pronger, Rochester defenseman David Cullen, Springfield center Jason Jaspers, Syracuse center Donald MacLean, Toronto defenseman Doug Lynch and Worcester goaltender Curtis Sanford.
