Norfolk Admirals News Release
WORCESTER, Ma. - Another solid night for Norfolk goaltender Brad Thiessen and three goals from two first-year Admirals steered the Norfolk Admirals (37-25-3-7) to a 3-0 shutout of the Worcester Sharks (35-33-4-2) on Saturday night at the DCU Center.
The Admirals' Brad Thiessen (5-6-2) saved all 28 shots that came his way while Worcester 's Troy Grosenick (17-14-0) stopped 24 pucks on 27 shots.
Antoine Laganiere gave Norfolk the lead in the first period off a blocked Dave Steckel shot that dropped to Laganiere's stick in front of Grosenick. The rookie out of Yale pushed a wrister above the outstretched catching arm of Grosenick and the Admirals led 1-0 at 12:33 of the opening frame.
Norfolk built upon their one-goal advantage late in the second with a rocket into the top shelf from the blade of Andre Petersson. His fourth goal in 14 games as an Admiral came when fellow Swede William Karlsson won a faceoff on the right side of the Worcester zone. The loose puck laid in front of Petersson who immediately sent a shot high into the right corner to make it 2-0 at 14:56 of the second period.
Petersson notched his second goal of the night and put the Sharks away with just under four minutes to play in regulation. Emerson Etem spotted Petersson near the high slot as he approached a puck along the halfboards in the Worcester zone. Petersson wound and fired a one-time slap shot off the feed from Etem that flew into the top left corner at 17:11 of the final period. Thiessen preserved his clean slate and the Admirals grabbed two more big points from Worcester in a 3-0 shutout of the Sharks.
Norfolk was 0-for-2 on the power play and erased the Sharks' only man advantage of the night.
The Admirals are now tied with the Hershey Bears for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference after the win Saturday night in Worcester, Massachusetts. Norfolk completes their six-game road trip tomorrow afternoon when they take on Portland.
