St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - J.T. Miller scored two goals and David LeNeveu stopped 31-of-33, as the Hartford Wolf Pack downed the St. John's IceCaps 7-2 Saturday night at Mile One Centre.
Shawn O'Donnell, Danny Kristo, Oscar Lindberg, Marek Hrivik, and Nick Latta picked up the other tallies for the Wolf Pack.
Austen Brassard and Jerome Samson scored for St. John's, who had their five-game point streak snapped with the loss. Eric Comrie made 23 saves in his first professional start.
Brassard got the IceCaps on the board first 1:39 into the opening frame when he notched his third of the season. With St. John's buzzing around the Hartford goal, Adam Lowry's rebound squirted through the crease to Brassard, who tapped it past LeNeveu to make it 1-0.
Hartford evened the score at a goal apiece just under two minutes later, on a goal from O'Donnell. After Justin Vaive wheeled his way to the IceCaps' net, O'Donnell got his stick on the loose puck in front before it slipped past Comrie to make it 1-1.
Kristo put the Wolf Pack ahead at 7:21, when he picked up the puck at the St. John's blue line, weaved his way to the top of the circle, and then wristed a shot that fooled the IceCaps' puckstop over the blocker to give Hartford a 2-1 lead.
In the second period, Hartford potted a shorthanded tally at 6:24 to extend their lead to two, as Lindberg turned and fired a shot on Comrie that beat him over the glove.
Less than a minute later, however, Samson cut the deficit to one when he scored his 24th of the season. Samson pounced on a loose puck and one-timed a blast from a tight angle that sailed past LeNeveu short side.
Hrivik restored the Wolf Pack's two-goal advantage with 1:14 remaining in the period, when he took the drop pass from T.J. Hensick on the rush and ripped a slap shot past Comrie to make it 4-2.
Hartford stretched their lead to three midway through the final frame on a power-play goal from Miller, who stepped into a slap-shot in the slot and fired it home.
Miller scored again at 12:59 to put Hartford ahead 6-2, when he redirected a pass from Kristo past Comrie.
Then, with just 30 seconds left in the game, Latta made it 7-2 when he tipped in a cross-ice feed from Darrell Powe.
The IceCaps play their home finale Sunday afternoon when they finish their two-game series with the Wolf Pack (4:00 p.m. NT). Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers on www.stjohnsicecaps.com and 930 AM, or watch online at www.ahllive.com. Pregame gets underway at 3:30.
