Crunch Earn 6-3 Victory over Marlies

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch defeated the Toronto Marlies, 6-3, tonight at the War Memorial Arena.

Syracuse Crunch goaltender Cedrick Desjardins stopped 33 of 36 shots faced. Marlies netminder Christopher Gibson stopped 24 of 28 shots on goal in relief of Garrett Sparks, who allowed two goals on 11 shots. The Crunch were able to convert on two of eight power-play opportunities, while the penalty kill unit shut down the only Toronto man advantage.

The win brings the season record against the Marlies to 2-0-0-0 and boosts the team's overall record to 30-30-4-8.

The Crunch took an early 3-0 lead over the Marlies in the first period. Captain Mike Angelidis scored a power-play goal just one minute into the frame. After an initial shot from Henri Ikonen, Angelidis picked up the rebound to put the puck past Sparks from the left side of the crease. Brett Connolly was credited with the secondary assist. The Crunch scored again at the 12:33 mark. After receiving a pass from Jon DiSalvatore, Philippe Paradis found the back of the net from the high slot to increase the Crunch's lead to two, chasing Sparks from the game. Angelidis tallied a point with the secondary assist. Yanni Gourde extended the lead to 3-0 with 1:22 remaining in the period. Gourde scored from the right side with an extra attacker during during a delayed penalty. Both DiSalvatore and Connolly picked up assists.

The Marlies cut the lead by one to start the second period. Sam Carrick scored off the rebound of Brad Ross's shot at the 3:29 mark. The Crunch increased their lead to 5-1 after consecutive goals from Jonathan Marchessault. Marchessault first goal came 10:25 into the second frame with assists from J.P. Cote and Adam Erne. At the 12:38 mark, Marchessault put the puck past Gibson for a second time scoring a shorthanded breakaway goal. Gibson blocked the initial shot, but Marchessault was able to grab his own rebound and find the back of the net. Connolly and J.P. Cote each tallied a point for the assists. The Marlies came back to score with 42 seconds remaining in the period. After a pass from Brad Ross, T.J. Brennan put the puck past Desjardins. Carrick was credited with the secondary assist. The Crunch led the Marlies 5-2 to close out the period.

After each team scored in the third, the Crunch defeated the Marlies, 6-3. The Marlies opened the third period scoring a goal 4:09 into the frame. Greg McKegg added to the tally with assists from Kevin Marshall and Brandon Kozun. The Crunch rounded out the scoring with a goal from Brett Connolly at the 17:17 mark. Connolly tipped the puck in off of a rebound from Vladislav Namestnikov's shot to give the Crunch a 6-3 victory.

The Crunch host the Adirondack Phantoms for their final home game of the season this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the War Memorial Arena.
