Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - Goals from Carter Rowney and Scott Harrington, as well as another outstanding performance from Peter Mannino, gave the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 2-1 win over the Binghamton Senators on Saturday night.
With the victory, the Penguins (42-23-3-5, 92 points) bypassed the Senators (42-24-1-5, 90 points) to move into first place in the East Division, and clinched their 12th consecutive playoff appearance.
Binghamton took a 1-0 lead in the game with just 47 seconds left in the opening frame when Ryan Dzingle, recently signed to an amateur tryout after completing his season with Ohio State, picked up his own rebound during a scramble in front of the Pens' net and swatted home his first professional goal.
The score remained 1-0 for the next 20 minutes and one second, before Carter Rowney evened the proceedings with a shorthanded tally. Brendan Mikkelson picked up a puck behind his own goal line and floated a clear down the ice, where netminder Andrew Hammond stopped the puck but left it in no man's land for Rowney. The Pens forward pulled a deke move and roofed the shot for his second goal of the season.
The Pens' second goal was just as pretty. Nick Drazenovic led a three-on-two break into the Sens' zone, pulled up short, then fed the trailing Harrington, who had the left side of the net wide open. He quickly shoveled a shot into the cage, giving the Pens their first lead of the night at 8:14 of the third.
Mannino was fantastic again, stopping 15 of 16 shots to record his 11th win of the season, his fifth win in a row, and his ninth win in his past 11 decisions. Since rejoining the team on February 28, Mannino has appeared in 14 games, and hasn't allowed more than two goals in any of them.
Good seats for Sunday afternoon's regular season home finale against the Toronto Marlies are on sale now and are available at the arena box office, online at TicketMaster.com or by calling 570-208-7367.
